UKULELE GRADE 8

What’s Involved?

Up To 80 Marks For
You are required to play three pieces – two must be played from memory (30 marks each), the other piece attract 20 marks.You can elect to play:

  • all three pieces from those listed within our syllabus
  • OR you can opt for three pieces of your own choice (*please find guidance in ‘Own Choice’ Zone)
  • OR you can mix repertoire featuring in our syllabus list combined with pieces of your own choice (*again please visit ‘Own Choice’ Zone for guidance)
Up To 20 Marks For
MUSICAL UNDERSTANDING
The candidate will be asked by the examiner to demonstrate their understanding of musical underpinning knowledge by discussing and/or explaining five of the following:

  1. Explain the circle of fifths.
  2. Why is the same dominant seventh chord found in both major and minor keys of the same letter name?
  3. Which note of the dominant seventh chord can be omitted?
  4. Present the case both for and against the use of digital tuners
  5. Explain temperament
  6. What is chord substitution?  Give examples
  7. Name two means of altering/adjusting the action on a Ukulele
  8. Explain the following; vibrato, tremolo, roll stroke, shuffle boogie, vellum and lapped heads
Playing Skills Guide For This Grade
TECHNIQUE
Finger picking / legato broken chords / vibrato, bends, slides / hammer-ons and pull-offs

IN ADDITION
Syncopation / articulation / dynamics and expressions / contrasts in tempo and styles / separations and melody from harmony / intros, fills-ins and outros
