Popular Songwriting – Breakthrough

Popular Songwriting – Breakthrough Level requires the candidate to submit two original songs. These can be performed live or played to the examiner in recorded form.
PART ONE (80 MARKS)
  • Each song should be approximately 2.45 minutes in duration and cover a vocal range of at least nine notes. It is not necessary for the candidate to be the vocalist and any preferred backing will be accepted.
  • Evidence of clear form with modulation is required for both songs. Each composition should be in a different key using contrasting styles and tempo
  • The examiner will request the form, keys and vocal range before starting.
  • It is a requirement that the candidate provides their own instrument and playback equipment for the exam.  However a piano will be available if required.
PART TWO (20 MARKS)
The candidate will be required to discuss with the examiner how each song was composed providing rough initial workings, such as written or recorded melody lines, chord progression, lyrics, riffs etc.
MARKING SCHEME
  • The use of contrasting styles, keys and tempo
  • Establishment of a hook (melodic, instrumental or lyrics)
  • Effectiveness of lyrics with required vocal range
  • Clear evidence of form with modulation
  • Discussion of composition with the examiner
