DIGITAL PIANO GRADE 8

What’s Involved?

Up To 80 Marks For
You are required to play three pieces – two must be played from memory (30 marks each), the other piece attract 20 marksYou can elect to play:-

–      all three pieces from those listed within our syllabus

–      OR you can opt for three pieces of your own choice (*please find guidance in ‘Own Choice’ Zone)

–      OR you can mix repertoire featuring in our syllabus list combined with pieces of your own choice (*again please visit ‘Own Choice’ Zone for guidance)

MUSICAL KNOWLEDGE
The candidate will be asked by the examiner to demonstrate their understanding of musical underpinning knowledge by discussing and/or explaining five of the following:

  1. Outline the information contained by studying the circle of fifths.  A diagram/chart may be used.
  2. To name any major or minor key with a key signature up to and including six sharps or flats and to state which notes are sharpened or flattened.
  3. What is a pivot chord?  Where and how are these used?
  4. Explain equal temperament and why do digital pianos offer alternatives e.g. pure major/minor, mean tone etc.?
  5. What do you understand by the term chord substitution?  How are these worked out?  Play or give examples to illustrate your answer.
  6. Why do both the major sixth chord and minor seventh chord both contain the same notes e.g. C6/AM7 and yet have a different name?
  7. Which note of the dominant seventh chord can be omitted?
  8. Name three categories of chords that cover the same notes/letter yet have different names?
Use of Digital Piano
You need to use at least six of the listed functions/features of your digital piano

  1. Split keyboard
  2. Dual voice
  3. Rock and Honkytonk piano voices
  4. Piano 8va higher or lower
  5. Use of brilliance
  6. A selection of reverb types
  7. Use of sustain pedal
  8. Optional use of beat/style (if available)
  9. Use of left or middle pedal
