UKULELE GRADE 7

What’s Involved?

Up To 75 Marks For
You are required to play THREE pieces (each one attracts 25 marks)

You can elect to play:

  • all three pieces from those listed within our syllabus
  • OR you can opt for three pieces of your own choice (*please find guidance in ‘Own Choice’ Zone)
  • OR you can mix repertoire featuring in our syllabus list combined with pieces of your own choice (*again please visit ‘Own Choice’ Zone for guidance)
Up To 10 Marks For
TECHNIQUE
From book SWINGIN’ JAZZ UKULELE 12 GREAT SONGS OF THE ‘20S & ‘30S (ISBN 10:0-7390-6469-X)
Play a minimum of two rhythm accompaniments to the song ‘AS TIME GOES BY’ – chord inversions must be played as indicated (key of E♭)
Up To 15 Marks For
MUSICAL KNOWLEDGE
The candidate will be asked by the examiner to discuss five of the following area’s of underpinning musical knowledge:

  1. The construction of the diminished seventh chord
  2. Explain the term enharmonic
  3. What is a compound interval?  Give two examples of chords which contain these
  4. What the difference is between a root and bass note
  5. Explain why the minor 7th chord and major 6th chord both contain the same notes yet have different names e.g. AM7/C6 EM7/G6
  6. Explain the terms modulate and transpose
  7. The signs   and + (when applied to chords) can be written another way, how is this written and what do these signs mean?
Playing Skills Guide For This Grade
RANGE
Use of frets up to and including 9-14

TECHNIQUE
Extensive use of finger picking / slides, bends and vibrato / Ragtime, Blues and Classical styles / change of key within a piece

IN ADDITION
Intros, outros and turnarounds / open G tuning / rhythm playing / standard notation
