What’s Involved?

Up To 75 Marks For
You are required to play THREE pieces (each one attracts 25 marks)You can elect to play:

  • all three pieces from those listed within our syllabus
  • OR you can opt for three pieces of your own choice (*please find guidance in ‘Own Choice’ Zone)
  • OR you can mix repertoire featuring in our syllabus list combined with pieces of your own choice (*again please visit ‘Own Choice’ Zone for guidance)
Up To 10 Marks For
RHYTHM OR TECHNIQUE

RHYTHM
From SWINGING’ JAZZ UKULELE 12 GREAT SONGS OF THE ‘20s and ‘30s, ISBN: 10: 0-7390-6469-X

Play a medium swing rhythm to the song ‘IT HAD TO BE YOU’
(* candidates opting for the rhythm option are welcome to perform this with a second player providing the lead/melody line or if preferred they can use a pre-recording of the lead/melody line)

TECHNIQUE

Play any two of the following:

  1. Track 12, 13 and 15 (pages 14, 15)
  2. Play the minor pentatonic scales Cm, Gm, and Am, two inversions (page 20)
  3. Play the major pentatonic scales C, G, A, E and D (page 21)
Up to 15 Marks for
MUSICAL KNOWLEDGE
The candidate will be asked by the examiner to discuss five of the following area’s of underpinning musical knowledge:

  1. Four types of cadences and the chord progression which make up each cadence
  2. The construction of both the dominant and major seventh chords
  3. Intervals within the harmonic minor scale
  4. Name the triads/chords formed on each degree of the harmonic minor scale
  5. Sequences
  6. The construction of major and minor pentatonic scales

TECHNIQUE
Slurs and slides / hammer-ons and pull offs / double stops / vibrato

IN ADDITION
Blues and Classical styles / four note chords / quaver rests
